Understanding our human performance and limitations is just the beginning of Human Factors interventions in this sector.
Given the right circumstances the human can be a resourceful, competent, reliable and capable part of a system and not the ‘weak link’, whatever their job role - from senior management to those working at the sharp end. Achieving this is at the core of Human Factors.
This sector whether offshore or on land is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual work place. Cultural backgrounds play an important part in Safety Culture. Communication, teamwork, shiftwork and the role of procedures are all important parts of day to day operations in this sector. Inadequate procedure management has been identified as a significant contributory factor in accidents such as Bhopal and Piper Alpha.
